Over the decades we have witnessed first-hand the deterioration, graffiti, neglect and crime ridden area that is our beloved historical Kailua Village. Everyone should be able to use the village day or night without being threatened or concerned for their safety. From employees to shop owners to residents we all have a vested stake in the future of our village. Today, concierges along the Kohala Coast routinely tell their guests not to visit Kailua Village due to high crime and unattractiveness. For the past four years following the success of the Waikiki Business Improvement District and the Fort Street Mall Business Improvement District, the Kailua Village Business Improvement District has worked hand-in- hand with these two entities to mirror their successful examples by helping to reestablish a quality of life we can all be proud of in Kailua Village. Across the nation Business Improvement Districts have created win-win scenarios for small and large communities where individuals who really care, want to get involved and want to make a positive difference! Through this legal mechanism the private and public sector will work in concert to improve and maintain the physical appearance and aesthetics of public right of ways, increased cleanliness and security. Now is the time, we have the opportunity to do something positive for our community and to set an example for others to follow. Please support the passage of Bill 55, Draft 2 for us.
