want to thank you all for coming to Kau on June 9th to hear our community's concerns
about Punalu~u and HB169-07.
I am sure that you have heard enough on the endangered sea turtle...but I feel I need
to emphasize the significance of this issue once again.
With 80~ of its global population already gone, the Hawksbill turtle is near the brink
of extinction. That means when it is gone, it will be gone forever.
The majority of the Hawksbill in the US Pacific nest only on a handful of East Hawaii's
remote beaches, of which Punalu'u is one.
It is a documented fact that the negative impacts from coastal resort development lead
to environmental degrAloha,
Iadation, which leads to habitat loss, and in some cases, species extinction.
When making your decision concerning HB 169-07-or any future bills that may concern the
preservation of Punalu~u, I ask that you consider this:
It is not just a simple issue of "jobs for Ka'u" or "keeping the Kau lifestyle like it
is"......Species extinction is a moral issue of global proportions.
Your vote in favor will ensure that you did everything in your power to help preserve
one of the endangered Hawksbill's last habitats. Your vote against will open the way to
coastal resort development.
Which legacy will you leave for the children of the future?
