I am writing in support of Resolution 169-07. I am a recent graduate of the University of
Minnesota, Duluth and currently reside in Bend, Oregon.
Two years ago I went to Hawaii for three weeks with a University of Minnesota class to
learn about Hawaiian culture. We spent almost a week at Punalu'u, and out of the three
islands and five different areas we visited it was by far the favorite stop of the trip.
No where else were we able to connect with the Hawaiian people and learn of their
lifestyle and values as we did in Punalu?u. I returned to Minnesota with a completely
different perspective and new appreciation of a culture that is almost forgotten.
Each year more than 50 students are able to participate in the same trip that I went on,
and the wait list is always long. It would mean a lot to the students and the university
to continue visiting this untainted area.
