Aloha,
I write to you today in strong support of Resolution 169-07, The Keolalani Hanoa Resolution. I had the
fortunate experience of visiting Ka'u and Punalu'u over New Years 2005. I graduated from the University of
Minnesota Duluth in May 2005. I didn't take the time to go abroad for a semester, instead I went on a two and
half week trip to three of the Hawaiian islands. We spent most of our time in Ka'u and most of it was in
Punalu'u. It was an experience I will never forget and will cherish for the rest of my life. I hope that support
grows to save this beautiful land. I am from Minnesota and would have never experienced this trip if it wasn't
through our Professor (Michael Sunnafrank). He and the friends he has met and made over the
years, taught our class Hawaiian traditions, beliefs, and shared their stories- it opened my eyes to a part of
Hawaii most people do not get to see. If this land is not saved many will not get to see it for generations to
come.
This land that the developers are trying to build on should be left alone for the simple fact of how local people
love and treat the land. This development would alter and possibly destroy the lifestyle that many of the local
people are accustom to. They taught me how to net fish and I was able to swim with some sea turtles. I hope
to return to Hawaii with my family in the near future and it will be a sad if this spot is different from how it was
when I visited. I hope we can find another solution to the proposed development. Please do everything you can
to protect and save this land.
