Dear Council Members,
As a resident of Ka'u I am writing to give my input on the preservation of Punalu'u beach
as a sanctuary and one of the last outposts for an undeveloped beach on the island of
Hawaii.
We have a precious asset at Punalu'u. It is precious because it is undeveloped. What is
development? It is equated with 'progress', but the initiators of any development are
seeing dollars. No developer would touch any project that didn't promise to pay back and
pad the pockets of those who initiate the 'progress' to begin with.
Anyone visiting Punalu~u sees dollars. It is raw, untouched, screaming potential - but
for who? When that question gets asked, the developer justifies the answer with how many
people will benefit. All those visitors...the locals who will have work...'preservation'
of the existing assets... Maybe, but still the developer makes big bucks and what gets
lost in all this is the place itself.
I feel that Punalu'u should be protected by 169-07. We must not develop this beach. Tend
it, respect it, play there - BUT DO NOT ALLOW DEVELOPMENT OF PONALU'U!
