I am writing in support of Resolution 169-07. As an owner of property in Wood Valley. I strongly support the Resolution.
With the acquisition of the lands described in the Resolution. the State would move in a direction I would be very happy to see.
Many people in other states have already banded together successfully to resist the encroachment of private business intere~~s
on the open space they value more highly each day. For example, people in Vermont and Oregon have said no to more shopping
centers, big box outlets, fast food chains, and subdivisions on agricultural land because the value of preserving open space is higher
to them than the convenience and menial jobs these businesses could provide.
l'hc Resolution leads us in the direction of looking mme closeh at protecting much more of the land in I{a'u from
development. Instead of al lowing big business interests to shape the future of the land from Volcano to Na'alehu, the State could pw
a moratorium on development and meet with the community over an extended period of time to see what other options might he
available. "fhe concept of"I own it so I'm going to do what 1 want with it' is outdated and potentially harmful to the communih .
"I'he pirofit of a developer is a loss to the rest of us who want to see trees and grass around us instead of more buildings and asphalt.
