I am a Senior Benefits Coordinator for Callaway Golf Company and currently a resident of Carlsbad, CA. I have visited Ka'u and Punalu'u several times in my life. The first time was with a class from the University of Minnesota Duluth. This trip truly opened our eyes to the vast differences between the "tourist trap" areas of Oahu and Kona and the untouched beauty of the land and people of the Ka'u and Punalu'u areas. This spring I brought several friends of mine to experience what I had during my time in Hawaii. My friends came away feeling as I did, that the areas of Hawaii that have been built up and overrun with hotels and resorts has nothing to do with Hawaii and the Hawaiian experience. They were also saddened to hear that the people we had met and land we had seen in Ka'u could be affected by the possible development of ANOTHER hotel. I echo the sentiments of my professor Mike Sunnafrank: "There are alternative ways of developing an economic engine for the region that would supply better jobs than the proposed development would. I am convinced that education, such as my students receive during our visits, would provide such an engine. My students learn much from our many local friends, lessons that change their lives. I am confident that people would be drawn to such eco-culture education opportunities." Thank You, Andrew Uber Carlsbad, CA Don't pick lemons. See all the new 2007 cars at Yahoo!
