Aloha:
My name is Janet Six. I am a long-time resident of Hawaii and a
Registered Professional Archaeologist. Each summer I and my team conduct
research into the now defunct sugar industry in the Moku of Ka'0 with funding
provided by the Earthwatch Institute. As a research scholar I am intimately
aware of the many cultural/natural treasures that are presently facing the threat
of large-scale development. I am writing to you in full support of Resolution 169-
07 to protect Ninole and Punaluu and ask that you help protect this area from the
impeding development.
In addition to precious wildlife, there are numerous, irreplaceable,
invaluable cultural treasures which will also be negatively impacted if the
proposed development takes place (similar to the heiau which is now surrounded
by the existing Sea Mountain golf course in the 1970s). This heiau is one of
many wahi pans in this area - a sacred space -not something to bounce golf
balls off! Imagine the squawk you would hear if a developer wanted to put a golf
course around the Pahala Hong wan ji or the Sacred Hearts Church in Naalehu!
To make myself clear: I am not anti-development - I am pro well-planned,
integrated, holistic, sustainable development and developers who genuinely
understand, listen and respond to community concerns. I am not in support a
plantation style "eco resort" -this is business as usual disguised in green
clothing. This is the last stretch of undeveloped coast in all of Hawaii -let
protecting it from "business as usual" be your legacy.
On June 4th the people of Ka'u spoke loudly and clearly. I ask that you
please listen to their voices and act appropriately. Please support of Resolution
