Hawaii County Councilmembers
Aloha Hawaii County Councilmembers,
As a resident of Hawaii in the 80's, and as a reporter for Pacific Business News, I had
the opportunity to go to the Big Island numerous times. My trips were never complete
without a visit to Punalu'u.
Your county has a unique opportunity to protect the critically important natural and
cultural resources of Punalu'u. The community is united behind preserving this area as a
cultural and natural refuge, a living classroom. Please do not throw that away on the
promise of a developer, seeking to profit off Hawai'i's public trust resources.
Resolution 169-07 would:
- protect much needed open-space, critical habitat, and cultural heritage in Ka'u.
- support local initiatives to educate our children and re-connect with the land.
- help to save honu 'ea (hawksbill turtle) nesting grounds and many endangered native
species from extinction.
- help to protect 9 heiau (temple) and several key wahi pana (sacred sites) from
desecration.
- prevent unwanted development of luxury homes and resorts.
- reunite the community behind a positive use of this public trust resource.
- show the world that community-based development can save the environment and improve
people's lives.
Please vote in favor of Resolution 169-07 and walk with the community towards a more
sustainable way of life, one that protects imperiled environments and perpetuates island
culture.
Mahalo for your support,
Nancy Davlantes
