Aloha Hawaii County Councilmembers,
I still have family on Oahu & Hawaii. Although my mother has died, she instilled in all
her children a love of Hawaii and Hawaiian culture. I am also an ardent believer in
environmental protection. Hawaii does not need more wasteful luxury homes and resorts,
especially those built near water and fragile ecosystems. Have we learned nothing from the
excesses of the past?
Most of my Hawaiian relatives live stateside (I live in Europe) because we can not afford
to live in Hawaii although we would love to. Those that return find housing exorbitantly
priced. If this pushing out of the local people continues, Hawaii will lose its special
character - its aloha spirit - that attracts so many in the First place.
Oa mau ke ea o ka aina I ka pono. There is nothing righteous in destroying the priceless
for short term economic gain. Punalu'u should remain as pristine as possible and be open
to everyone who respects the land, not just the rich (who generally don't).
The proposed cultural preserve seems to be the best way of achieving this.
Please vote yes on Resolution 169-07. It's a win-win for everyone in Ka'u. The community-
based plan for Punalu'u will protect the environment, save the culture, educate the
people.
Don't sacrifice that for luxury homes and resorts that will only make it harder to live in
Ka'u.
