Save Punalu'u from Luxury Development " " " '
TO: The Hawaii County Council - Vote Yes on Resolution 169-07~~~'
Punalu'u (diving springs) is the heart of the last remaining open space in the Ka'u
District of Hawaii Island and the only oasis from the Ka'u desert.
Oppose Developers who want to build over 1,200 luxury homes, 2 luxury hotels and a
shopping center at Punalu'u. This development will cause irreversible damage to the
fragile natural systems of ponds and springs that have made Punalu'u famous.
Hawaii County Council Resolution 169-07 calls for protection of the coastal areas and
adjacent lands at Punalu'u utilizing the county's "Public Access, Open Space, and Natural
Resources Preservation Fund" and a grant from the federal government. It follows the
Mayor's recommendation that Punalu'u Beach Park and adjacent lands become the number two
priority for purchase.
Listen to Hawaii Residents, including residents of Ka'u who are in support o£ protecting
this important coastal area that is home to many endangered species and the oldest and
largest sacred sites in the state.
And on June 4th, 2007 over 900 Ka'u residents came to a historic public hearing and an
overwhelming majority voiced their support for the resolution and the protection of
Punalu'u - the only public beach park in all of Ka'u.
PLEASE, help the effort to Save Punalu'u! To all o£ the Hawaii County Councilmembers
support for community-based, sustainable development and Resolution 169-07.
I urge council members to support Resolution 169-07 because it will:
- protect much needed open-space, critical habitat, and cultural heritage in Ka'u.
- support local initiatives to educate our children and re-connect with the land.
- help to save honu 'ea (hawksbill turtle) nesting grounds and many endangered native
species from extinction.
- help to protect 4 heiau (temple) and several key wahi pana (sacred sites) from
desecration.
- prevent unwanted development of luxury homes and resorts.
- reunite the community behind a positive use of this public trust resource ,/n i/~~

- show the world that community-based development can save the environment and improve
people's lives.
- Oppose any large scale development in this sacred area for the future generations and
preservations of all the endangered species, especially of the turtles nesting grounds'!!
I stand with the community in opposition to the development of luxury homes and resorts on
the sacred grounds of Punalu'u. I urge you to vote for Resolution 169-07 because it will
enable the community to create a culturally and environmentally appropriate plan for the
area.
