I write in strong support of Resolution 169-07, The Keolalani Hanoa Resolution. I am a
recent graduate of the University of Minnesota Duluth. I recently had the privilege of
taking a second visit to the Hawaiian Islands this past May. This second trip brought me
new knowledge and understanding about the development and history of the Islands.
I spent a weeks time in Ka'u and Punalu'u; during this time I learned about the Hawaiian
culture and their current struggles to preserve their people and their land. The
development that is taking place on Hawaii is not only culturally devastating, but
environmentally as well. The people that I had the privilege of meeting on my trip
brought a new perspective on the situation. The ways in which they live off the land and
support each other is a way of life that needs preservation. They are the native people
of the land and they are being set aside for tourists and money hungry businesses.
There are alternative ways of generating a-healthier economy in Hawaii. Education is an
important tool that few people are being exposed too. I have been blessed with the
knowledge I have gained in the past month. Because of this I am writing to support the
Resolution 169-07 in hopes that future Hawaiians may see and live the culture that their
ancestors once practiced.
