Subject: Peddlars at Waipio Valley Overlook
Dear Council:
Waipio Valley is a sacred and special place that affords
visitors and locals very limited parking at the overlook.
The business and residential people here, with the help of
the county try to keep this pristine area and view as clean
and uncongested as possible.
As a business owner I understand the free enterprise system
and the need to create a living. However I also understand
the need for permits and the requirement for commercial
zoning. Our towns and districts have commercial areas set
asideto allow people to run their businesses without inter-
ferring in residential neighborhoods and cultural enclaves.
To allow peddlars to place orange traffic cones to "reserve"
parking spaces for their wares and to allow them to display
multicolored umbrellas to attract the visitors is not in
tune with the ambiance of this historic valley.
I have had people approach me to rent our facilities and
operate a icecream/lunchwagon at the overlook. So far
I have deffered to these proposals as I feel that it would
be a direct slap in the face to the' HawaiianG and the county
and state,`
I therefore request that Waipio Overlook be restricted to
All peddlars. Other vendors are on their way and we certainly
dont want to have another Hanama Bay or Waikiki T-shirt
situation.
Mahalo for your time.
Aloha,
Alan H. Shattuck ]iq /a
