Subject: Peddling at Waipio Valley Lookout.
Dear County Council Members:
Waipio Valley is one of the most important treasures of the
Hawaiian culture. The Waipio Valley Overlook is a place `ohere
visitors and kamaainas are first introduced to Waipio. "the
natural beauty of the overlook is magnificent.
During the time that I have owned residential property
at Waipio Overlook there have been many instances of peddlars
setting up operations at the lookout. Most of them have
thankfully moved on but to date there have been a few persistent
peddlers that have entrenched themselves into the lookout
area. As a result the lookout has evolved from a peaceful and
serene setting to a location that looks more like a circus
or county fair. Certainly not like a cultural or historic
site!
Visitors to the overlook, because of limited parking, are now
parking in my front yard. It is a constant problem to place
a note on the windshield asking them not to park on my property
or block my driveway.
I respectfully request that the City Council impose a pedalling
ban on all vendors in the overlook area as this location should
be reserved for visitors and locals alike. This is the same
restriction that you created to protect the City of Refuge and
and certain locations i~ Kamuela. We have zoning laws that allow
commercialism in certain areas, why do we allow venders to
change a quiet neighborhood and scenic area into a shoddy
commercial site?
