At the most basic level, ITS is the transportation industry, using technology,
to save L11/~S, `fIA61~, and M®NI,~Ir.
How does ITS accomplish this?
ITS is the utilization of technology to facilitate communication between the various
agencies involved in managing the transportation system, those groups that contribute
to large uses of the transportation of the system, and the system uses themselves.
Q3ecause it is primarily a communication facilitation system, ITS is applicable to both
urban/city and rural environments. This is particularly true of heavily congested areas
as well as desolate roadways where incidents may go undetected for extended periods
due to low traffic volumes.
There are several broad categories of ITS applications, some old and some new.
• `Traffic Control and Signal Systems
• Tourist and Traveler Information
• Traveler Safety and Security
• Highway Management Systems
• Emergency/Incident Management
• Transit, Para-Transit, and Public Transportation Management
• Fleet Operations and Management
• Communication Infrastructure
• Electronic Payment Systems
• Parking Management Systems
• Commercial Vehicle Operations ,
• Advanced Vehicle Control and Safety Systems
Within each of these broad categories, there are multiple devices and functionalities.
