Hawaii County Councilmembers
Aloha Hawaii County Councilmembers,
As a kanaka maoli that has deep roots in Ka'u I am compelled to write to you today to
voice my support for maintaining the natural setting of this pristine area.
It is my hope that we place the real value of these areas on the pedestal where they
belong and that we look to our already zoned urban and resort areas to develop our housing
and visitor needs.
The proposed resort and luxury homes do not benefit the community or island residents and
will only serve to bring in yet more of the wealthy few while pushing out our kupuna, _
cultural practitioners and local families. Times are changing, resources are being
depleted world wide and our precious tourist economy needs to be augmented with
sustainable alternatives and the preservation of this space is high on that list.
We must realize that the wealth of untainted areas, such as Punalu'u, are the riches we
must preserve. And in doing so we respect not only our traditional places but our economic
future.
How many time are we going to redraw the line before we run out of places to make them?.
I stand with the community in opposition to the development of luxury homes and resorts on
the sacred grounds of Punalu'u. 2 urge you to vote for Resolution 169-07 because it will
enable the community to create a culturally and environmentally appropriate plan for the
area.
"He ali'i ka 'aina; he kauwa ke kanaka" The land is a chief; man is its servant.
