I am writing to support Hawaii County Resolution 169-07. My residence is in Honu'apo in Ka'u District and I worked as a family
physician at Ka'u Hospital from 1983 through 2002. I had the fortune to live at the Dahlberg/Reamer property at Punalu'u for the first
13 years and then at Sea Mountain Colony One for the next 7 years. There can be no question that the lands around the Punalu'u
Beach must be protected as open space and available for their spiritual value to the Hawaiian people and for all the earth's
inhabitants. The issue is so much larger than allowing Punalu'u's destiny to fall to a simple vote of the current residents of Ka'u
District. It is imperative that you comprehend the importance of this rural open coastline without thousands of new dwelllings for the
rich and 'foreign.' This is a plea to protect the aina. There will be no Hawaii without the protection of places like Punalu'u.
The term'a'ali'i ku makani describes the Hawaiian people of Ka'u. My husband, Kiko, and I chose it as the name of my clinic.
Please make the correct decision regarding saving Punalu'u for the future. This is light years beyond matters of market value,
developers' rights, and service jobs. Hawaii is destroyed by gated communities. Will you view it as an improvement to have concrete
planter beds and sprinklers surrounding million dollar homes as in west Hawaii?
Having stated the above, I also am aware that naming Ka'u Preservation in the resolution has caused some additional local
opposition to the resolution. I trust that differences can be resolved after the resolution passes.
