Dear Sirs,
We call for the passage of Resolution 169-07. We pledge our wholehearted
support for the people of Ka' u and Resolution 169-07 that will protect the sacred
lands of Punalu~u and the ONLY remaining public beach park in Kau. The last
great open space in Hawaii is part of the ancient heritage of the Hawaiian people.
It is also the longest undeveloped shoreline in the state and home to countless
endangered species. It should be given historical status and preserved and
protected always. Protecting Ka' u is vital to the survival of Hawai' is unique
island culture and fragile ecosystem.
Our family lived in Hawaii for many, many years and return as often as possible.
Tragically, since we moved there in 1969 so much of the sacred land of the native
peoples and the unparalleled beauty of Hawaii has been eroded and destroyed by
rampant, often unprincipled development. Please save Punalu'u for the people of
Ka'u, and indeed, for the whole World aS a living classroom and educational resource that
will a source of spiritual and cultural enrichment and national pride for all present and future
generations of the people of America.
Finally, we would like to suggest nominating Punalu'u and Ka'u for consideration
as one of UNESCO's World Heritage sites.
