Maka'ala Street, Hilo, Hawaii 96720. These funds, donated as part of Wal-Mart Hilo's "Safe Neighborhood Grant" program, will be used by the Hawaii Fire Department to establish and operate its Explorer program. The Explorer program is a co-educational, young-adult program developed and supervised by local community organizations, providing an opportunity for young adults to explore a particular career field. The Hawaii Fire Department's Explorer program is designed to educate young men and women in fire science, and expose them to the various HFD functions, including Fire Prevention and Fire Suppression, Rescue, Hazmat, and Emergency Medical Services. Also enclosed is a bill for an ordinance amending the Operating Budget by appropriating the $500 monetary donation into the Fire Department's Fire Prevention OCE account. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED): Wal-Mart Hilo, through its "Safe Neighborhood Grant" program has donated monies totaling $500 to the Hawaii County Fire Department. The funds are to be used by the department in establishing and operating its Explorer program. The Explorer program is a co-educational, young-adult program developed and supervised by local community organizations, providing an opportunity for young adults to explore a particular career Feld. The Hawai'I Fire Department's Explorer program is designed to educate young men and women in fire science, and expose them to the various HFD functions, including Fire Prevention and Fire Suppression, Rescue, Hazmat, and Emergency Medical Services (EMS), whether they enter the fire service field or not.
