Hello, My name is Jenny Uglem and I have been one of the lucky students to participate in a program the
University of Minnesota-Duluth sponsors with the great help of some wonderful Hawaiians and professor
Mike Sunnafrank. Mx. Sunnafxank has been such a positive advocate fox the preservation and education of
Hawaiian culture and has done a wonderful job keeping us alums of the program up to date. I know many
of us don't write to send our appreciation and concern fox these issues but we have ALL been touched and
moved by our education and experiences with this cultural program and wanted to say THANK YOU!!!!!
for voting to preserve this area. It is too often that we see "big business" and "urban growth" win out and
Hawaii has such a beautiful culture I hope that people recognize it's value and need to preserve as much as
possible. I know to some day when I have children I plan to bring them back to the places I was able to
visit and learn so much fxom...the experiences and education gained through this program was truly life
changing fox all of the University students including myself and it would be a tragedy if any of those
majestic, beautiful places and history were lost...please continue to STAND STRONG and protect
something that unfortunately the rest of us here are unable to have ourselves. What you axe doing is truly a
wonderful thing-thank you thank you thank you!!!!

Great news. The Hawaii County Council voted unanimously to enter into negotiations to purchase
Punalu'u and surrounding areas from the developer in order to preserve it and kill the condos! If
you
did write in support of that, thankyou very much. Turns out those letters were key in changing many
council members minds. Those letters, which ran 5 to 1 in support of the resolution were a big factor in
getting the resolution passed. There was a total of 650 e-mails/letters received with about 530 in favor.
If
you wrote you are one of those 530 voices that made the difference. 530 out of all the billions of
people on this earth acted, ACTED and that action worked Congratulations on effective activism. Now
when your children and grandchildren visit Hawaii they can go to Punatu'u and see what you saw. Now
when our local friends want to go opi'i picking, net fshing they can go without having to contend with
thousands of condo livers. Now real estate prices can be contained in Ka'u and perhaps our local

coming up in a few weeks and a-mails of
your gratitude (even ifyou did not write earlier) wild be a great
help in supporting the resolution in the face of what undoubtedly will be last minute pressure from
