Subject: The beautiful Punalu'u
2 recently received a notice informing me of the wonderful opportunity afforded by the
purchase and preservation of the Black Sand Beach and Ninole Springs. I hope the council
will act to preserve this area. It is important ecologically, and even more for the
preservation of Hawaiian culture.
As a tourist, I don't visit Hawaii because it looks like everyplace else. I come because
of her unique environment and culture. The culture of a people cannot exist separated from
the land. I realize there is genuine need for economic development, however I hope that in
this instance preservation of the rich heritage that is Punalu'u will take precedence. The
example that the council would set, for youth and for generations to come is incalculable
and invaluable, and I sincerely hope that this preservation would take precedence over-
development.
