Murashige Laura
From: mess0104@d.umn.edu
Sent: Thursday, July 26, 2007 5:42 PM ~ , ,

To: counciltestimony@co.hawaii.hi.us ~i ? c-
Subject: Save Punaluu, Save America `
~,r
Dear Sir or Madam:
I am writing this letter out of deep concern for the future of Punaluu, a place 2
travelled to earlier this year through a study abroad program with the University of
Minnesota. I will not burden you with typical words you will likely find in the majority
of protest letters in support of the conservation of Punaluu. All I will say is that there
is indeed an immense difference between being a citizen and being a consumer. In the
United States we are all consumers, but not all of us are citizens. Punaluu is a rare
community; rare in the sense that it is local, sustainable, agrarian. It is the essence
and definition of what a community is and serves as a model for what other communities in
the United States should become. In a commercial, capitalist culture it is often easy to
lose track of and forget what is truly important. The people of Punaluu understand what is
truly important. Please; embrace it, do not exploit it. Developments, capital, investment,
economic prosperity rise and fall at millenia speed faster than cultures. We must make.
America stronger through the force of citizenship and community, not by economic
prosperity.
Unsustainable development in Punaluu will tear apart a prosperous community; prosperous in
a way in which a minority of communities in the United States are prosperous. When true
and honorable communities break apart our nation becomes weaker, not stronger. Preserve
Punaluu, preserve America.
Yours Truly,
Laddie Messing
This message was sent using IMP, the Internet Messaging Program.
Comm. No. 3 ~ ~
Ref.
