Dear Council Members,
I am writing to express my concern over your decision to delay
Resolution 169-07 that I was so pleased to hear would save the land
at Punalu'u. I urge you to reflect ethically on whatever forces are
allowing your grip on this area to loosen.
I understand that one can easily be suaded to see only profit in
turning this land over to an industry that promises economic
prosperity. But there is no lack of evidence that those profits come
at the sacrifice of numerous valuable resources. Not the least of
which is the sanctity of the land itself, which cannot be bought or
sold, but easily destroyed.
As a non-resident white American (I'm a resident of Wisconsin) I can
only see further destruction of the unique local culture, ecology,
and environment to come at the hands of these developers. Please
think critically about pursuing ecocultural-friendly projects to
provide the economic stimulus that you desire.
The Ka'u area is one of very few places that has demonstrated to me
that Hawaii is home to a people and way of life that is clearly
foreign to mainland-born Americans. I was greeted with Aloha and left.:
as a huge supporter of Hawaiian sovereignty. These facets of your
island will continue to die with the sprawl of these development
projects. Your people have spoken to express that they are not OK
with that.
Please do them justice by steadfastly protecting their interests.
Clearly, the local community needs this land for their pride and
cultural posterity much much more that my midwest neighbors need
another ocean-front McCondo to choose from.
