COUNCIL MEMBERS BOW TO PRESSURE FROM MAYOR'S OFFICE July 25th, 2007
DEVELOPER MOVES AHEAD WITH PLANS TO TURN PUNALU~U INTO A MASSIVE RESORT
A STUNNING REVERSAL BY THE COUNCIL
PUNALU~U IN LIMBO
KA~U PRESERVATION MEETING SET FOR THURS., JULY 26TH
After nearly three months of endless hearings the Hawaii County Council voted 5 to 4 td
stop the vote on Resolution 169-07 that would protect the shoreline at Punalu'u and Ninole
on the island of Hawaii. As requested (again) by Mayor Harry Kim who testified via video
from Hilo, Council Members, Higa, Hoffman, Ikeda, Yagong and Yoshimoto voted to postpone
the vote on the resolution, bowing to the pressure from the Mayor's office. The Mayor was
given to September 19th,
2007 to pursue his call for compromise that calls for hiring a professional mediator to
find a way to bring all the parties to an agreement that would satisfy both the developer
and those who are in favor of the resolution.
Even after the developer, Pat Blew offered NO new compromise to his plan to build over one
thousand luxury homes and 2 exclusive resorts and a shopping center on the revered and,
sacred land at Punalu'u, the five councilmen voted to stop the vote. The action delays any
action by the Council for nearly 2 months, while the developer is given a green light to
move ahead with their development plans that are opposed by a majority of the people of
Ka'u.
