Dear Councilman Yagong:
The members of the American Legion, Post 20 in Kona have studied diligently,
the possibilities of a formal name for the Veterans Cemetery in West Hawaii.
I have been advised by Dr. C. O'M. S. Smith, Commander of Post 20 that it is with
unanimous approval that the membership of Post 20 request and petition the Council of
the County of Hawaii to approve the following name for the veterans cemetery in West
Hawaii.
PU'U HO'OMAHA O NA PO'E KOA O HAWAII KOMOHANA
This name has been certified by William Paris of the Kona District to have the following
meaning in English:
Resting Place (or cemetery) of the Warriors (or soldiers) of West Hawaii
It is the wish of the members of Post 20 that the full name in the Hawaiian
language have a place at sometime in the future on a building or suitable edifice within
the cemetery.
It is the further wish that the name be abbreviated for use on a highway sign,
since the entire name is quite long, to "PU'U HO'OMAHA", under which could be "West
Hawaii Veterans Cemetery"
Thank you for your assistance in this matter, on behalf of all veterans in the West
Hawaii area.
