Chair Hoffman and Council Members:
I am sending in a letter I wrote Mayor ICim with copies sent to all of you, on
August 5, 2007. I stead on my feelings expressed in that letter which thanks Mayor I{icrs
foc his veto of $ilt 112_ I respectfully request that the council does not attempt to
override the mayor's veto of this flawed bill. Thank you.

Dear Mayor Kim: d~~ l
I want to thank you very much again for vetoing Bill 112, the affordable housing
bill. I am aware that you have been caiticized for this decision, but I want to lend my
wholehearted support to your courageous decision.
Clearly there are serious concerns about assessing affordable housing
requirements on subdivision.4 previously zoned prior to these requiraneats being enacted.
As Councilman Higa said in the news article, the bill will hurt local people. I agree with
you that more public hearings were essential prior to passing a bill that had snch
sweeping effects on familial transfers of land.
I am a local girl bom and raised in Kona on my family's coffee a~ frr»t farm.
My parents worked extremely hard to pmvide for my sisters and me, brit there was never
much money beyond necessities. The one thing my Mom and Dad wanted to leave for us
was our land that has been in the family for three generarions. Now as the time has come
to subdivide the property for the family, Bill 112 will make this dream nearly impossible.
The zoning has been in place for many years.
I am not implying that them is not merit in affordable housing requirements for
new subdivisions, but to do so ren+oadivety will cause extreme hardship to my family and
many others who own small parcels of lead they want to pass on to their descendants.
There is no reason to nrsh this bill through without carefiil reconsideraticarundpublic
input. I agree with you that there was no guarantee that any amendments m this bill
would have passed. I think it is better to wait and bring forth a good bill with no Saws -
needing ra am~dments.
Thank you again for your veto of Bill 112. I hope the council has the wisdom to
let the veto stand.
