We, Carl and Mahealani Maikui, Hawaiian Practitioners and future
residence of Waipi'o Valley, humbly ask that Waipi'o be moved from the
second property on the list to the number ONE property on the list. We agree
that ALL of our places are WAHI PANA and ALL of them are extremely
sacred and they ALL should be protected. However, we ask that Waipi'o be
moved because the Rice `Ghana have accepted the offer amount that the
property has been appraised for by the County. The Rice's could have sold it
for more money and have been offered more than the appraisal price, but
have refused because of the tremendous efforts from the Waipi'o and
Kukuihaele Community. We as a community have been meeting weekly
trying to fmd ways that we can make this happen. We have reoccurring
problems with tourist who venture into the valley with No Respect, No
Knowledge or No Idea why they are entering the valley other than it's pretty.
Thanks to some grant money the community came together and now we have
a Educational Officer that helps make the tourist aware, but we need more,
and with this property we believe that our strong community can do it. We
ask for this move because as a community we have many hopes and dreams
for this beautiful property that will benefit everyone.
