Subject: Bill No. 201 - Re-naming of the West Hawaii Veterans
Cemetery
There are two veteran groups on the Big Island, the American Legion
and the Disabled American Veterans, each of whom have selected a
Hawaiian name that they feel is appropriate for the veterans cemetery.
Both arganixations have a strong vested interest and right to make
name suggestions for this project. Ii is unfortunate, how aver, that
they have not worked collaboratively in arriving at a common name that
they both can support.
I am, therefore, as an interested third party requesting that Bill No.
201 be deferred in order that all interested parties have a chance to
meet and reach a consensus on an appropriate Hawaiian name for a
facility that will service all veterans and their families in our
community.
