RE: CHANGES TO BILL NO. 201, DRAFT 2,
REGARDING NAMING OF THE HAWAII VETERANS CEMETERY-
PU'U HO'OMAHA O NA PO'E KOA O HAWAII KOMOHANA
For your consideration and approval, attached is Bil] No. 201, Draft 2.
At its March 6, 1998 meeting, the Hawaii County Council unaimously recommended
deferral of Bill No. 201, Draft l along with report No. 91. The use of the word "rename"
was in question.
Attached is a copy of Bill No. 201, Draft 2, with the following changes to promote
clarity:
(a) the word rename has been changed to name
(b) "West Hawaii Veteran's Cemetery, "to" "Pu'u O Na Po'e Koa O
Hawaii Komohana", the word "to"has been replaced by a hyphen
(c) the comma in Veteran's has been deleted
(d) the last sentence in Section 1, the word West was added to read West
Hawai' i
Favorable responses were received from the Kona Post of the American Legion and the
Disabled American Veterans Charter 7. The Veterans Advisory Committee met on
May 21, 1998 at which time they expressed concerns regarding protocol. The committee
believed that the initial request should have been sent to them directly before council
consideration. However, the Advisory Committee recommended that the primary name
be "West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery" and the secondary name be the Hawaiian
translation. The Advisory Committee recommendations have been numbered and
referred for informational purposes. ~ _ , p
