Attached is a resolution urging the State Legislature and the governor to allow voters
statewide the opportunity to decide on the formation oflocally-elected boards of
education,

Hawaii Department
of Education The Board of Education shall have the power, as provided by law, to formulate policy and to
exercise control over the public school system and public library system through its executive
Site Map offcers, the superintendent of education and the state librarian, both of whom shall be appointed
by the board; except that the board shall have jurisdiction in a manner consistent with general
Members laws. (Reference: Constitution of the State of Hawaii, Article X, Section 3; Act 150, SLH 1981).
The functions of the Board of Education are described in the Hawaii Revised Statutes.
Application for
State Librarian The Board consists of 14 members. Seven of the members are elected according to geographic
Position region and 6 are elected at-large. One non-voting student member also serves on the Board.
The BOE meets every first and third Thursdays of each month. The minutes of past meetings and
agendas for future meetings can be found in the BOE schedule.
BOARD STANDING COMMITTEES: The function of board standing committees is to review, to
deliberate, and to submit advisory reports to the board, on all matters referred by the board or the
board chairperson, or on other matters, within their respective subject areas, which are as
follows:
