Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Resolution No. 262-07, reports as follows:
Resolution No. 262-07, transmitted jointly with Bill No. 128 by Director of Finance
William Takaba, via Communication No. 526, dated July 9, 2007, authorizes the acceptance of a
monetary donation of $500 from Wal-Mart Hilo. These funds are donated as part of Wal-Mart
Hilo's "Safe Neighborhood Grant" program, and it will be used by the Hawaii County Fire
Department to establish and operate its Explorer program.
The Explorer program is a co-educational, young-adult program developed and supervised by
local community organizations, providing an opportunity for young adults to explore a particular
career field. The Hawaii Fire Department's Explorer program is designed to educate young
men and women in fire science, and expose them to the vazious HFD functions, including Fire
Prevention and Fire Suppression, Rescue, Hazmat, and Emergency Medical Services.
Pursuant to Article XIII, Section 13-12, of the Hawaii County Charter, it provides that the
Council, on behalf of the County, may accept gifts or donations of personal property.
A letter of appreciation will be sent to Mr. Terrance Crowley, Manager, Wal-Mazt Hilo,
325 E. Maka`ala Street, Hilo, Hawaii 96720, acknowledging this generous donation.
There was no discussion on this measure.
Your Committee on Finance is in accord with the purpose and intent of Resolution No. 262-07
and recommends its adoption.
