SUBJECT: The Baby Steps Project ~ a
Aloha mail I am writing to respectfully ask that representatives from the Baby
Steps Project be given the opportunity to share details with council members about their
organization at the Sept. 18 Human Services and Economic Development Committee
meeting in West Hawaii.
As we all know, this island is suffering from a methamphetamine epidemic.
Accompanied with that epidemic are tragedies such as meth-addicted pregnant women.
Children, whose mothers use methamphetamine or other drugs, aze more premature with
a low birth weight, or worse, with missing body organs or parts. Some have a stroke or
heart attack in the womb.
The Baby Steps Project led by Dr. Ira Chasnoff seeks to educate and stop
pregnant women from using drugs and drinking during pregnancy. The group also
delivers 2,200 newborn baskets per year, with each basket filled with resources available
to mothers and their babies on the Big Island. Please allow for this half-hour
presentation so we council members can help educate the public about Baby Steps.
