HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOM 0634.007 2006-2008 WAL*MART® Wal-Mart in Hawaii Hawaii Stores • Wal-Mart came to Hawaii in 1993, when Sam's Club opened in the Peazl City Highlands Center. Today there are eight Discount Stores and two Sam's Clubs in the islands. • Discount Stores are the original Wal-Mart format, typically ranging in size from 80,000 to 150,000 square feet and carrying approximately 120,000 items of general merchandise. There aze currently four Discount Stores on Oahu; one on Maui; two on the Big Island; and one on Kauai. • Supercenters offer one-stop family shopping that combines general merchandise with a complete supermazket, averaging about 185,000 square feet and carrying approximately 142,000 items. Hawaii is one of just three states that do not currently have a Supercenter. • Sam's Clubs are warehouse membership stores that are typically 130,000 square feet in size and carry approximately 5,500 different items. There aze two Sam's Clubs on Oahu. • Neighborhood Mazkets aze convenient stores that include grocery, pharmacy and general merchandise, typically about 41,000 squaze feet in size and offering about 29,000 items. There are no Neighborhood markets in Hawaii. People • Wal-Mart is Hawaii's fifth-largest employer. As of July 2007, the total number of Wal-Mart associates in Hawaii is 4,393. • The average wage for regulaz, full-time hourly associates in Hawaii is $12.19 per hour. Additionally, associates are eligible for performance-based bonuses. • In recent yeazs, Wal-Mart has contributed four percent of an associate's eligible pay to their combined Profit Sharing and 401(k) Plan. • In Hawaii, Wa1-Mart associates can purchase healthcare for 1.5 percent of their gross wages to a maximum of $20.50 per pay period. Spouses can be added for $36.29 and children for $8.54 per pay period. The maximum amount for a family four or larger would be $20.50 for an associate and $52.27 for family members including spouse and children. Dental plans also aze available. Suppliers • In FYE 2007, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. spent approximately $188 million for merchandise and services with 488 suppliers in the state of Hawaii. As a result of Wal-Mart's relationship with these suppliers, Wal-Mart supports 17,711 supplier jobs in the state of Hawaii. • Supplier figures provided by Dun & Bradstreet. Taxes and Fees • Wal-Mart collected on behalf of the state of Hawaii more than $43.0 million in sales taxes in FYE 2007. • Wal-Mart paid more than $10.1 million in state and local taxes in the state of Hawaii in FYE 2007. Community Involvement • In 2006, Wal-Mart Stores and Sam's Club gave $599,445 in cash and in-kind donations to local causes and organizations in the communities they serve in the state of Hawaii. Through additional funds raised through stores and Clubs throughout the state, Wal-Mart contributed and raised a grand total of $978,090 as a result of its presence in Hawaii. Wal-Mart is the state's fifth-largest employer and, as of July 2007, employs approximately 4,393 in the state with our Wal-Mart and Sam's Club operations. As of FYE 2007 (ending January 2007), the Hilo and Kailua-Kona Wal-Mart stores on Hawaii together donated a total of $86,073 in grants for the year to local charities, schools, community organizations on the Big Island. In addition, $16,451 worth of in-kind donations also were pro- vided to community organizations across the island during FYE 2007. Wal-Mart works with approximately 50 suppliers on the Big Island. Wal-Mart operates a Hawaii purchasing office, based on Oahu, with a team of 24 associates. Because of our unique geographic location and logistical requirements, our Hawaii operation is the only state to have a separate buying office outside of the company's primary buying office in Bentonville, Arkansas.
