Inquiry already made earlier in yeaz to Andy Levin and Lincoln Ashida. Aloha Mayor Kim, I have been seeing this notice in the County Newsletter for a while regarding the Family Violence Advisory Committee. I am very keen to work as a volunteer for another committee and this one most has my passion and some degree of expertise. I am still interested in requesting there be a Domestic Harmony Advisory Committee and wonder how you feel now about my submitting a request regarding this and before too much has been done to solidify the reactivation of the Family Violence Advisory Committee. The work done towazds increasing public awareness about domestic harmony has met with considerable success since it was first initiated over 7 years ago. We have had several concerts, public performances, proclamations and good publicity and media support. People everywhere respond with enthusiasm to domestic harmony. They repeatedly comment on how they want to learn and know more about how to live in harmony. They say they have heard enough about domestic violence, They want to hear about domestic harmony. This includes Lawrence Mahuna and Jay Kimura, both of whom agree on the importance of supporting domestic harmony awareness. On a recent visit to Oahu I saw one of my 'Just say Yes to Domestic Harmony' bumper stickers. Many were given out to the legislators and staff while I was over there securing support for the'Safe Baby Resolution'. Over 300 bumper stickers were given to the Barking Sands Missile Range and are around Kauai as well as neazly 6000 on Big Island along with over 10,000 neon green ribbons. More will come as more funding is secured. Many ribbons and bumper stickers were given to family and people involved directly with recent domestic violence fatalities starting with Sarah Marie Fay, Daysha Aiona Aka and the last two, the fetus and older brother recently murdered in Puna. They provided much comfort especially at the time. As you know, a group under my direction was invited to present at a very well known international conference on conflict resolution last spring in St. Petersburg, Russia. See: www.planetpuna.com. Aka Dooley, well respected Hawaiian cultural expert went on behalf of our group to present about Aloha and ho'oponopono, as part of our program ' The Consciousness of Harmony from Hawaii with Aloha'. Her great grandmother (correction: Grand Aunt) was the professor at University of Hawaii, who wrote the first Comm: No. ~i O 5. l 1 Ref. Tol!Ms Ref. Dote -sSEP~5 211 book about ho'oponopono. I am currently working on creating the Domestic Harmony Awareness Initiative 2007- 2008 and will be working on details of this over the next several weeks. As you know, November is Domestic Hazmony Awareness month by mayoral and governor proclamation, and *PlanetPuna*. This year plans are already underway to have concerts, performance events at different locations across the island. We aze in discussion to have our first event off island on Oahu too. As well, plans to include some kind of island wide promotion with the Hawaii Tribune Herald aze in the discussion stage Every year work expands to extend our outreach, to involve more people throughout our community. This year would be a great year to include the administration more directly through the creation of the Domestic Harmony Advisory Committee. The last Family Violence Advisory Committee meeting I attended, which was the last one they held, I was told, "We don't want to hear about domestic harmony. We are here to talk about domestic violence." I am asking you to help change direction so that they do want to hear about domestic harmony on behalf of the people of this island who are in support of saying yes to domestic harmony rather than no to domestic violence. You and your administration have been leaders in sa many ways. Please lead the way to harmony. Many are looking to us here in Hawaii and al] this initiative will do is grow and get more and more substantial. There is always an advantage to being positive rather than focusing on the negative. 2 However, in past discussions, those who organized and came up with says like "No excuse for domestic violence" wanted those words, "domestic violence" in there to draw attention to violence instead of the positive. This was done purposely, and I must say it does get one's attention. That is the main issue here, to get people's attention and increase their awareness. Based on that,l do support the emphasis on the words "no excuse for domestic violence" and for the Family Violence Advisory Committee. Birth educator Elena Tonetti's latest dvd, `Birth as We Know it" will be shown followed by a talk with midwife/doula Malu Landt, who will speak about the importance of domestic harmony as it relates to safe gestation, gentle birth and good birth outcomes. Completing the program is Star Newland, "How we think is what we get", addressing the use of language to help create greater levels of harmony, wellbeing and higher levels of functioning. Mahalo nui loa, Staz Newland Domestic Harmony Awareness Initiative 2006 - 2007 What an amazing year for Domestic Harmony. We have come a long way since our first venture 7-8 years ago in Pahoa with Ginny Aste, Kathy Amundsen and Angel Festivals, Marsha and others who came to help do the first domestic harmony awareness poster contest. Posters made it to Prince Kuhio Mall and prizes donated by the community were given by Charlene Iboshi, deputy prosecutor. Bay Clinic was a help then too by making Ginny available to us. We have had several other poster contests with up to over 400 hundred entries one year. Children's posters have graced Mayor Kim's office, Prosecutor's offices, Bay Clinics, Border's, State building and other locations. Since then we have held concerts or related events at Pahoa Fazmers' Market, Pahoa Pool and Recreation Complex, Maku'u Farmer's Association, Kea'au Village Market, University of Hawaii -Hilo, Shaka's, Aupuni Room East Hawaii, Uncle Mikey's, Starbuck's and other venues. Over a hundred performers like Randy Mattos, Diane Aki, Puna Kel'iihoomalu, Ernie Cruz, David Seawater Band, Bruddah Kuz, Lava Jam Band, Gabriel deSilva, Tony 1 Selvage, kumu Ehulani Stephany and her halau, have celebrated domestic harmony awareness along with publice servants and their representatives like Mayor Harry Kim, Billy Kenoi, former Rep. Helene Hale, former Council member Gary Safarik, Council member Emily Naeole, Andy Smith on behalf of Governor Lingle. Local community groups like Queen Lili'uokalani Trust for Children, Bay Clinic, Neighborhood Place of Puna, UH-Hilo Dept. Women's Studies; *P1anetPuna*, Friends of the Park, Committee on the Status of Women and others have joined us. The first November is Domestic Harmony Awareness Month and November 11, Domestic Harmony Awareness Day' Proclamation is issued by *P1anetPuna* 2000. The First Domestic Harmony Awareness Initiative came about 2006 when it was determined there was an extensive range of areas that could be addressed to help increase public awareness of the reality of domestic harmony and possibilities for all; skill sets and attitudes that could be taught so there would be more modeling of domestic harmony; language possibilities so we understand the difference in what we create/generate depending if we are against domestic violence or for domestic harmony. In the former, just what can you DO to show you are against violence? How is that different than what you can show BEING for domestic harmony. A strong focus on the preventive aspects as well as proactive aspects became prominent. This included: gentle birth benefits through the Safe Baby Resolution (HR16, SCR8); introduction to a global audience of the information in the Safe Baby Resolution (APPPAH conference Los Angeles, by Janel Miranda, January) and presentation of neon green'new beginnings' ribbons to over 350 guests at Governor Lingle's International Conference on Leadership for Women 2006'. September 2006: Our outreach included the presentation at the Pahoa Family Clinic `The Importance of Domestic Harmony and Women's and Society's Wellbeing" for'National Women's Health Month' and sponsored by the Hawaii County Committee on the Status of Women. September 2006: The State Commission on the Status of Women was approached requesting support that the focus be shifted to being pro domestic harmony and for the Safe Baby Resolution. The County Committee on the Status of Women chose to be against domestic violence. September 2006: Featured in article on Committee on the Status of Women, Hawaii Tribune-Herald, quoted regarding domestic harmony. Proclamations from Governor Lingle and Mayor Kim along with County Council are 2 requested and granted making November Domestic Harmony Awareness Month and November 11, to be Domestic Harmony Awazeness day. These were read at various events and can be found at www.planetpuna.com along with other domestic harmony related information and archived materials. Encouragement by Mainstreet Pahoa which accepted title 'Pahoa Home of Domestic Harmony'. Great press release in Hawaii Tribune-Herald. November 2006: 'Pahoa Home of Domestic Harmony' celebration co-sponsored by Shaka's Nightclub and *P1anetPuna* the Aloha Planet, an afternoon till closing time tribute to domestic harmony featuring the wonderful harmonies of Auntie Diane Aki, Puna Keli'ihoomalu, Kavike, Earl and the others who helped. First hanging of the 'Pahoa Home of Domestic Harmony Awareness' banner. 'Road show' of language sculpting skit with Destiny O'Hare and Women's Pacific Theater group. A few hundred green ribbons are given away. Elena Tonetti's work, 'Birth as we Know It' is shown to two expectant ladies and their partners during the event. November 2006: A showing of Elena Tonetti's work, 'Birth as we Know It' given to the ladies at BISAC, Hilo along with bumper stickers 'Just Say Yes to Domestic Harmony' and green ribbons and a talk by author addressing the importance of domestic harmony and gentle birth in their own and their keikis' lives, to encourage a more healthful, sound maternal environment, thereby assuring a greater likelihood of their babies lives being more naturally high. These are the first of nearly 6000 bumper stickers given this year across the island and to other islands as well. Over the last three or four years a few thousand, around 5000 perhaps have already been given away. Last year they were sent to Pacific Missile Range Complex along with ribbons. They are so well received that the new base commander on a recent visit (Aug. 2007) to Hilo allowed author to 'pin' him with his domestic harmony ribbon. Members of Navy team showed up wearing their ribbons. November 2006: Domestic Harmony Awareness Day (11/11) all day aloha concert at Kea'au Village Mazket, t-shirt painting, face painters, fundraiser for Christmas Wish Program for homeless keiki. Diane Aki, Randy Mattos, Tony Selvage, Dave Seawater Band add their harmony to the days event, First official performance of the language sculpting skit with Destiny O'Hare and Women's Pacific Theater group. New Council member Emily Naeole addresses audience. Author reads proclamations. Last day November 2006: Performance of language sculpting skit for Governor's Advisors Council of East Hawaii and request for their support for domestic harmony. By November 2006: Preproduction of a video about domestic harmony initiated. Filming commences at 11/11 concert, includes performance for Governor's Council and continues to interview with Chief of Police, Lawrence Mahuna. January 2007: Author makes way to opening of state legislature and to gather support for the Safe Baby Resolution. February 2007: First fundraiser for Domestic Harmony with Rowan Brothers in collaboraton with Lola's, held at Uncle Mikey's. Featured event in Hawaii Island Journal. February 2007: First contact with Steve Olweean of the Common Bond Institute along with Harmony Institute, Russia, and the 15th. Annua] Conference on Conflict Resolution, thereby initiating our invitation to present'The Consciousness of Harmony -from Hawaii with Aloha' for May, in St. Petersburg, Russia, represented by Hiaka Iolani Dooley. Apri12007: Star goes to Oahu to meet legislators and gather support for Safe Baby Resolution, in Health Committees. Appeazs on community tv and is interviewed for Big Island papers. Quoted on domestic harmony and gentle birth, May 2007: Mayor Kim proclaims, 'May Gentle Birth Month and Mother's Day, Gentle Birth Day' in recognition of value of gentle birth and domestic harmony practices in good life outcomes. Insightful article appears in Big Island Weekly about upcoming St. Petersburg trip. May 2007: Aka Dooley flies to St. Petersburg, Russia to attend the conference and present 'Aloha and Ho'oponopono', a standing room only presentation from Hawaii with Aloha. Proclamations for this conference are given by the State Senate and Mayor Harry Kim and can be seen on www.planetpuna.com. She is invited to present her work in several countries. May 2007: Author and Dr. Mike Hyson podcast reading of their pieces for Memorial Day on behalf of the Cetacean Commonwealth and Humans to who have died through war and genocide of both our species. Request for moratorium, to work instead to learn from Cetacea how to live in harmony with them and then ourselves. June 2007: Author flies to Oahu to meet Dr. Morgan Barrett and Loretta Fuddy (DOH) to discuss how to implement changes identified in Safe Baby Resolution. Joined by Dr. Laura Moire, discussion of many azeas including importance of domestic harmony in neonatal life, water birth and dolphin attended dolphin births. Directed to certain resources in communities to work with them. Program under development to offer expectant ladies craniosacral work, acupuncture , massage and other treatment and balancing therapies to help provide better gestational environments to enhance birth/life outcomes. Have spoken to HMSA office, Hilo for 4 funding grant. August 2007: Aka Dooley returns from Indigenous Grandmother's Council, California, invited to pass on Aloha and Ho'oponopono and is inspired to go on 'Mission Aloha', a journey across America and Canada to the reservations to share the wisdom of Ho'oponopono to the Native people. Aloha, Harry Hence my interest in securing some official policy level acknowledgement of the importance of domestic harmony awareness education and preparation. We have come a very very long way this year. We have many angels, top of list being Dr. Michael Hyson, on behalf of the Hyson Family Foundation who provided the substantial resources for several months so these many many activities could be supported and accomplished and who kept me on the road literally so I could create, produce, attend these events and who generously supported the life of my incoming granddaughter. My son Tiger, his partner Angelica and my granddaughter Violet who inspires me day after day to help assure there is a good future for her and us all as well as a home base to create from. The Teitelbaum Family Foundation which provided resources as well as wonderful 7 spaces to dedicate time to create these programs. Dr. Laura Moire for her help in keeping me on the road sometimes on Oahu and Big Island. William of Kailua who hosted my stays to meet state officials. Steve Olweean, Hazmony Institute, Jay Watkins, Ron Pecoff, Ron Anastasia to help us get Aka to Russia with aloha. Media coverage from: KHBC Radio, KWXX, KPUA.
