And Council Members
FROM: Emily Naeole, Council Member
DATE: September 11, 2007
SUBJECT: Friendly Place
Aloha mai! I am writing to respectfully ask that representatives of the Friendly
Place in Kailua-Kona be given the opportunity to detail the program to council members
at the Oct. 16 Human Services and Economic Development Committee meeting in West
Hawaii.
The drop-in center in West Hawaii was built and donated to the County of
Hawaii by Stanford Carr. This facility houses the necessary amenities and support
services a person experiencing homelessness may need. An open kitchen area for
personal food preparation, clothing, a shower, private bathrooms, and secured lockers can
all be found at the Friendly Place. Case management and support services are also
available there.
The Friendly Place is open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Community resources, housing applications, substance abuse, mental health counseling,
emergency supplies, minor wound care and health education are all available on site
through partnerships with St. Michael's Nurses Ministry, the State Community Mental
Health Clinic, Community Health Centers, Solid Rock Ministries and others. Homeless
people can also access basic office equipment like phones, messages, mail, fax and
computer access at the Friendly Place.
Please allow ahalf--hour for this presentation detailing the Friendly Place to
council members.
