Establishing a Hawaii County Cultural Resources Commission
I am writing on behalf of East Hawaii Cultural Council (EHCC) to support Council Bill 176,
establishing a Hawaii County Cultural Resources Commission.
The EHCC was established in 1967 as a non profit arts and cultural organization. It is located at
141, Kalakaua Street, Hilo, in a beautiful and functional building which is on Ore National and
State Historic Registry. EHCC has strong Bass roots support of over 2000 dues paying members
and its programs were enjoyed by over 62,000 attendees last year alone. It was awarded the BEST
of Big Island in three different categories in a survey conducted by the Hawaii Island Journal: Best
Galleries to show Art, Bes[ Hawaiian Music Festival and the Best Art Center.
On behalf of our Board, our members and our comnrrnrity and our sister arts and cullrrral
organizations, I am writing in support of establishing a Hawaii Courrly Cultural Resources
Commission. This will offer a channel of communication for community based input for
governmental decisions regarding preservation of local community historic stnrctrrres and cultural
resources in a variety of ways.
The East Hawaii Cultural Council commends you on your efforts to protect the irreplaceable
historic and cultural resources of our beloved hmd for future generations
