and its programs to provide shelter and care for the Island's dogs,

organization that is progressive, comprehensive and very much in
touch with its community and itS needs as far as companion animals

Also among the Hawaii Island Humane Society's prugressive programs, which are
paid for by voluntarily donation rather than municipal tax dollars, is their low-cost
sterilization certificate program. By working with the Island's veterinary
community, Hawaii Island Humane Society is striving to eliminate the number one
r•.ause of shelter euthanasia: pet overpopulation. Low-cost sterilization programs,
coupled with mandatary sterilization of shelter-adopted animals and differential
licensing far altered vs. intact pets, encourage pet owners to not allow their
animals to randomly breed,
Hawaii Island should be very proud of the dedicated group of staff, volunteers and
board members who make up the heart of a caring and professional organization:
The Hawaii Island Humane Society, They contribute greatly to what is often a
thankless task -caring for unwanted and stray companion animals.
If we can answer any questions the Council may have regarding the services and
programs of a well-run, full service animal shelter or provide information regarding
a professional evaluation audit, I hope that you will feel free to contact The HSUS.
I can be reached at 301-258-3120 or you niay contact Ms. Sally Pekety, Director
of Animal Sheltering Issues at 301.258-3122.
Sincerely,
Martha C- Armstrong
Vice President for Companion Animals
