Dear Council Members:
This letter is written to urge support for Res. 169-07 -the acquisition of critical land in and about
Punaluu.
As we watch with tears the destruction of the West Shore of our beautiful island, the re-contouring of
Pine Trees to the point where the Ocean is barely visible, the preservation of open spaces in Kau District
becomes increasingly important As you drive our island's perimeter road, increasingly the ability to see the
ocean is disappearing.
We have an opportunity at Punaluu to preserve significant, criticalry important lands -lands that are
ecologically and cufturaly significant, lands that are a delight for eye, rrnnd and spirit.
You have been told that the people of our island would prefer development so that jobs would be made
available locally to the people who kve in Kau. 1 understand that this is not true. For me, preservation is far
more important than temporary construction jobs and later, bw wage housekeeping positions. I have worked
in the resort /timeshare industry, and for the most part, once the construction is complete, the remaining jobs
are the same low paying, futureless positions of any hotellresort business. These are not the jobs we need to
retain our youth in the State of Hawaii . The jobs we need to retain our youth are jobs with futures, jobs that lead
to wages in excess of $12 an hour -not jobs that are acquired at the expense of the land that makes our island
such a special place.
I urge the Coundl to acquire these lands, preserve our special island places, and continue to add more
jewels to the necklace of acquisitions that was started with Whittington Beach area. Retain the coast for the
people of Hawaii .
Hindsight is 20-20. Hjndsight suggests there should have been a minimum 100 yard no-construction
zone from the high water mark mauka all around the island. This would be a safety zone against tsunami, it
would provide preservation of many ancient trails, and offer a space for enlargement of the trail system so it
would be appropriate for walking and tricycBng. Placement of structures would be mauka of the first 100 yards
of buffer. There are still a few miles of coastine where such a plan could be implemented. If it cannot be
everywhere, can't we at least stag in Kau and demonstrate our island's heart is bigger ttran its pocketbook?
Please, pass Res. 169-07 and preserve Punaluu.
