Aloha Council Members,
I completely agree with the letter below. I think the $80,000 spent was a horrible waste of taxpayer
funds and to give this "spin doctor" consulting company one more dime is going to make the entire Big
Island community very angry. This expenditure was stupid at best,
not to mention, devious.
I am a past and future Naalehu property owner. Please pass reso. 169-07 and move on.

LET'S BE HONEST

The verb to Preserve means "to maintain in safety from injury, peril, or harm; protect."
The noun Preservationist is defined as: "One who advocates preservation, especially of
natural areas, historical sites, or endangered species." AMERICAN HERITAGE
DICTIONARY of the English Language 3rd Ed.
Mayor Kim's $80,000.00 political give away, to the intellectually dishonest psycho-
babble specialists known as James Kent Associates, for the alleged purpose of talking to
the people of Ka'u; "about their concerns involving development and
change"...."especially related to the Sea Mountain Five proposal," and then report back
is a sham, deceitful, and defamatory.
The report summary intentionally mis-defines preservation so that the reader may be
hood-winked into believing that preservation is bad and "conservation" is good.
Therefore, if preservation is bad, then Ka'u Preservation is bad. The report states: "The ~
notion that a resource would be locked up and taken away from the people Y'
(preservation) was foreign to them." No one in Ka'u Preservation has ever advocated the ~ s o
taking away and locking up any resource. In fact, the opposite is true. We advocate the ~ ~
preservation of the coast of Ka'u for all species, including humans. We advocate that the = w
coast of Ka'u should not be developed with housing and commercial building, but rather • 4
left as open space for the education and enjoyment of all, rich and poor and all those in ~ ~y
between. We advocate the protection of local fishing rights. We advocate the protection ~jy "f
of endanged species and preservation of Hawaiian history and culture in a living sense, S
not as a caricature in a cement environment. We advocate that commercial and housing " F-
development be reasonably placed in our existing communities of Ocean View, Na'aJehu
and Pahala. Ka'u Preservation supports agriculture in Ka'u. Ka'u Preservation supports tttiii

infrastructure development in Ka'u. Ka'u Preservation supports good jobs for the people
of Ka'u.
Ka'u Preservation is made up exclusively of volunteers who owe their loyalities to no
developer or land owner. Rather, the members and supporters of Ka'u Preservation owe
their loyalties to our ethical and cultural time so that all may live to their fullest and
stave off a premature ending to the magic and sacredness of Ka'u and Hawaii itself. We
freely work for those who do not exist yet. We freely work for all the children so that
they may have a future with Ka'u's nature and culture. For money, political and
developer biased reasons, JKA's report summary sets out untrue and defamatory
statements about Ka'u Preservation. It states that Ka'u Preservation leadership created
fear among the citizens for their safety. What a bunch of hogwash. Attack the
volunteers. Praise the community, but attack the community volunteers and leaders.
You wasted the public's money Harry and allowed your psycho-babble spinmisters to
publish and defame the Ka'u community's grass-root volunteers and leaders. The report
was done for the purpose of aiding and abetting the proposed development and
destruction of sacred Punalu'u. Have you no decency, Sir?
