Unfortunately I wi11 not be able to attend the council meeting as I will be
substitute teaching that day but I just wanted to ask the council and it's
members to consider a few things especially in light of the recent newspaper
articles that appeared on Friday.
It has disturbed me from the beginning that the administrative arm of the county
government is involved in influencing the legislative branch so intently. My
concern is that each of the branches are designed to operate independently and
do the job required of them. I do not feel it is correct for the office of the mayor
to try to influence the councils decision on this Resolution so blatantly.
I would also ask the council to not be unduly influenced by the recent "listening
project". Please consider that it is the last of many testimonies that have gone
on over this issue. Do not forget the people that took the time to attend and
testify at the Public meeting in Naalehu expressing there concern overwhelmingly
against development of Punalu'u, over 400. Nor of all the people that took the
time to come to all of the meetings that been held to date, nor of the survey that
was conducted by Mr. Yagong (over 800) that again indicated most citizens did
not want a development.
I am also disturbed by the lack of Professionalism shown by James Kent and use
of the media prior to this meeting in a very negative way to influence this
council. They are feeding the public their opinion and innuendo based on a
survey they conducted based on standards they do seem to want to publish. It
also seems odd that the report was not even read by the mayor (per the article)
or I assume the council prior to releasing information to the press. In fact, a call
to the mayor's office today indicated that the full report is not available to the
public and probably will not be before the council meets on the 19th, Seems
very convenient.
However, all that said if one reads the paper carefully it indicates that a majority

of the people do not want a large development and want to protect the coast
line. The passage of this resolution is a great first step in insuring both of those
things occur. If this resolution passes and eventually the designated area is
purchased it would certainly fulfill one of the needs of the community. The
economic development could still occur even if this particular developer does not
choose to meet the needs of this community.
Please consider all the facts, and pass this resolution as the majority of the
people in Kau have indicated as their desire from the beginning.
Thank you for all the effort you have put in insuring the Coast of Kau is protected
for our future generations.
