The Honorable Curtis Tyler
Hawaii County Council
25 Aupuni Street
Hilo, HI 96720
Dear Councilman Tyler:
It has come to my attention that there has been an effort on the part of
certain parties to denigrate and undermine the laudable efforts and
achievements of the Hawaii Island Humane Society in handling their island-
wide mission.
In the past seven years, I have made use of the services provided by HIHS,
i.e., the spay and neuter program for my own pet, but also in dealing with the
containment of free-roaming dogs due to irresponsible owners in my
neighborhood, as well as dealing with an overpopulation of cats on our
downtown Hilo campus. The latter situation if not for HIHS support could
have developed into seriously endangering the health and welfare of our
students.
In every instance, IIIHS has exhibited a professional sense of responsibility
within the scope of their authority. I feel that this organization has proven
continual diligence in managing their human and other resources and
facilities to the benefit of Hawaii Island's population--both bi- and quadri-
pedal.
Please seriously consider extending the range of administrative authority
and County-wide financial support for HIHS to continue the fight against
ignorance in their crucial public health mission.
