Dear Councilman Tyler,
It has come to my attention that you are reviewing the Hawaii Island Humane Society and
their operation and I would like to offer my insight into the administration of the
organization as I perceive it.
It has been my pleasure to work with Lisa Fowler as a fellow Humane Society executive
director for the last year and a half, working with the Hawaii Association of Animal
Welfaze Agencies (HAAWA) and I appreciate the level of professionalism she has brought
to our organization. I have particulazly appreciated the work she's done regarding the
legislative issues we have faced this past yeaz. The leadership position Lisa has taken on
the statewide privatization' problems has helped all humane organizations in the state and
her ability to keep us focused on specific ideas and goals has proven very helpful.
The job we do is many times minimized by those not knowledgeable in animal matters and
our image is often stereotyped as being only a `Dog Catcher'. Lisa's help to me
regarding legal, management and budgetary issues I have had to face here on Maui has
been insightful, professional and very helpful.
I have also come to respect and rely on her as a resource, both at the local level and the
state, for her grasp of animal issues as well as her ability to look past the easy answers to
problems faced by all of us. Councilman Tyler, if there is anything I can do to assist you
in any way with issues facing the Big Island please don't hesitate to ask and Lisa has my
full support and admiration.
Sincerely,
Gary Hend$V
