However, as students grow
into adolescence and progress through school, a gender gap develops between girls and boys in
their interest and pursuit of math and science, and ultimately career paths. With this decrease of
interest in math and science, the girls also experience a lessening ofself-esteem. GEMS is
designed to counteract this problem; and
WHEREAS, through GEMS workshops, girls are introduced to women in their own
community who are successful in math and science-related fields. By spending a day being
mentored, the girls are encouraged to imagine themselves in challenging, interesting careers, and
given specific information about how to pursue such careers; and
WHEREAS, GEMS will be held on Thursday, November 15, 2007 at the Outrigger
Keauhou Beach Resort in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, Contingency Relief funds from Council District 7 will be appropriated to
the Office of the Mayor for the GEMS project; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that the
following amount is hereby transferred/appropriated as set forth below:
FUND: General
AMOUNT OF
APPROPRIATION: $2,000
