Aloha Chairman Hotliuauw and Council Members,
I am in support of the Superstore Ban. We can
not afford and do not have space fa the freeways
needed to get large numbers of cars into superstore
business.
lu Hilo we have Wal-Mart wanting to move from
their 134,000 sq. ft. building to a neighboring lot of
200,000 sq. ft., from it's 20 acres to 40 acres. Lr
that area we have numerous popular stores and already
the traffic is at maximum that we can comfortably
handle.
In May 19, 2007 Hawaii island lou+7,ai article by
Dave Smith, Wal-mart says "the existing store
would be either leased to another business or torn
down 1'or parking i'or the new store." 1t is
ecologically unreasonable and wasteful to build larger
and larger buildings, and tear down former ones or
leave them sitting empty. We have had in Prince Kul,io
a large space empty ever since Wal-mart came to the
nearby area.
Another important issues is fhat the land that
Hilo Wal-mart is wanting to move to is Hawaiian Home
Lands, and many Hawaiians would like to see this land
used for thee, to live au. Perhaps here for tare
Hawaiians there could be a creative community oriented
development of mixed use and "Village Homes" type
development of gardens Xe playground in the center
area. People living in this area con?d walk to get 32 , f 0s
needed supplies or go to a movie. Cpmm; No.

infrastructure for an individual lot. If they were to
use for homes tiris Hilo area that they are considering
leasing to Wal-Mart, infrastructure would cost far
less.

prices, building prices, traffic problems, and need
for sustainable development, superstores are not
appropriate far our island. tt is hard to see how
this area could handle a doubling of the traffic,
which would happen with a doubling of Wal-mart.
