The Prosecutor's Office had applied for and was awarded funds to improve the Big Island Drug Court's (BIDC) efforts to more effectively intervene and engage the methamphetamine offender. This grant, to be administered by the Prosecutor's Office, also benefits the Hawai'i State Judiciary and the Office of the Public Defender. These grant funds will create one (1) paralegal position for the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney and one for the Office of the Public Defender; will create two (2) probation officers for the Big Island Drug Court; will provide substance abuse treatment and drug testing for twenty (20) new additional clients that will be admitted to the program; will allow the BIDC team to attend the Annual National Association of Drug Court Professionals Workshop; and will provide on-site education and technical assistance training for criminal justice and treatment professionals. Enclosed are three (3) resolutions, one authorizing the Mayor to enter into an agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice to accept this grant and the other two authorizing the Mayor to enter into agreements with the Hawai'i State Judiciary and with the Office of the Public Defender for their participation in this initiative. The official start date of your grant is September 1, 2007. Therefore, you can be reimbursed for approved expenditures after this date.
