HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOM 0663.002 2006-2008 October 2, 2007 Dear Councilman Ikeda, U ~ I was very interested in your proposal to upgrade Carvalho Park. Far decades the whole county has used this park literally to pieces. It serves the greater Hilo area and hosts teams from around the island almost weekly for sporting events. The ball field and gym are almost used daily. From our keiki to our seniors; for softball, volleyball, basketball -leagues and tournaments; for fundraisers, social events - the Portuguese Culture Club's annual festival; baby and graduation parties and for just playing in the playground, we have all grown up around and gathered here for a lot of the important events in our lives. I live close by and have grown up playing at the park and most recently with the Hui Na Kolohe softball team. Some of us have tried proposing upgrades over the years but have always been told "not enough money". The gym is in serious need of repair/renovation. The pavilion needs upgrading/renovation, repair, additional restrooms, a larger, more cost effective and efficient kitchen, and, given the Hilo rain, maybe additional square footage for sheltering. A clubhouse was proposed a few years back and that might be good too. Adequate and safer parking is also sorely needed. This would help the public safety issue in reducing crime and promote better pedestrian safety in the overcrowded lot. More parking space would also eliminate the need to park on Waianuenue, again for safety issues. Carvalho Park has helped make great memories for the thousands of us who have used it. So the bottom line is that Carvalho Park is long overdue for an upgrade and I support and am glad to see your effort to accomplish this.
