Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Resolution No. 344-07, reports as follows:
Resolution No. 344-07, transmitted jointly with Resolution No. 343-07 and Bill No. 178 by
Director of Finance William Takaba, via Communication No. 681, dated September 14, 2007,
authorizes the acceptance of a monetary gift of $39,567 to the Hawaii Fire Department from the
Gregg Malkin Memorial Foundation, organized under the umbrella of the Daniel R. Sayre
Memorial Fund. Glenn and Donna Malkin established this foundation in memory of their son,
Gregg, who perished in a drowning accident, offshore of Maku`u Drive in Hawaiian Pazadise
Pazk.
These funds will be used to purchase water rescue equipment (valued at approximately $27,567)
and to contract an instructor for the "Ropes Course III" (valued at $12,000) for the rescue
personnel at the Waiakea and Kailua Stations.
Pursuant to Article XIII, Section 13-12 of the Hawaii County Chazter, it provides that the
Council, on behalf of the County, may accept gifts or donations of money, securities, or other
personal property or real estate or any interest in real estate.
A letter of appreciation will be sent to The Gregg Malkin Memorial Fund, c/o Ms. Kalei Stern,
Director of Mazketing & Client Engagement, Hawaii Community Foundation, 1164 Bishop
Street, Suite 800, Honolulu, Hawaii 96813, acknowledging this generous donation.
Your Committee on Finance is in accord with the purpose and intent of Resolution No. 344-07,
and recommends its adoption.
