Dear Members of the County Council,
We are writing to encourage you to support Resolution 228-98. The statement of values
developed along the lints of the National Association Counties statement is a sound
approach to long term planning of our island's future.
I; . ~ At its core, the concept of sustainability simply mez:nr~. c:~nsidering the future well being of
the people and their lift support system when making. decisions. The concept is similar to
the Native American admonition to consider the imp;ta of decisions today on the next
seven generations.
The statement of values also reinforces the concept of d mocratic decision-making- When
citizens are recognized as the source of governments! }r,~aer and authority, then
governmental decisions are not taken which impose pro;Ferns or plans the community
does not embrace
This island is obviously at a cross roads where deci>ion; ,+xe being made that will seriously
affect future generations and the environmental inte~rit~ and viability of the land.
Lt the development of a new plan for the county, the {Ie,:isions on how public tends should
be used, or the other issues of planning and developm<;~r now facing the populace and the
government, agreement on a conunon set of principle~~. czn ~o far in producing a future
that will preserve, protect, and enhance the life of the people and the sine. The statement
of values in Resolution 228-98 is a good start in art~cul::,tinq such principles
Thank you for considering our views.
