The statement of values developed along the lints of the National Association Counties statement is a sound approach to long term planning of our island's future. I; . ~ At its core, the concept of sustainability simply mez:nr~. c:~nsidering the future well being of the people and their lift support system when making. decisions. The concept is similar to the Native American admonition to consider the imp;ta of decisions today on the next seven generations. The statement of values also reinforces the concept of d mocratic decision-making- When citizens are recognized as the source of governments! }r,~aer and authority, then governmental decisions are not taken which impose pro;Ferns or plans the community does not embrace This island is obviously at a cross roads where deci>ion; ,+xe being made that will seriously affect future generations and the environmental inte~rit~ and viability of the land.
