Subject: Bill 175
My name is Diane Miller, and as a longtime Kona resident (and voter), I implore you to give this bill your
heartfelt consideration.
The rate of unplanned for growth we are experiencing here on the Kona side, and the piecemeal approach to
development to which we have been subjected (whether by design or neglect) begs a change in the make-up of
the Planning Commission. Here we are in the 2151 century, 50 years since becoming a state, and still there is no
comprehensive plan for the development of Kona! This area has grown steadily for 20 years, but no one on the
Hilo based (and focused) Planning Commission could be bothered to consider, let alone plan for the infrastructure
needs such growth brings. Shame on all the Big Island politicians before you, and shame on you as well, if you do
not rectify this situation. Kona is rapidly becoming a mish-mash of disconnected subdivisions (most with lot prices
that only "rich mainlanders" can afford) and the majority of our retail shopping takes place in non-descript metal
warehouses totally lacking in any sense of aesthetic design, let alone a sense of Hawaii! This is not what Hawaii
should look like!!
I believe Kona's best hope to save what little of her soul remains, is to have Planning Commission members,
living in, familiar with, and dedicated to the unique needs of the Westside. A Planning Commission which will
understand the importance of not selling off our "golden goose," and place a premium on protecting the best
parts of Kona, while allowing development (where appropriate) with an eye to maintaining the unique aesthetic of
this area. They should also assure that infrastructure impacts created by development are addressed, before
permits are issued.
Please support Bill 175!!!
