The Keaholoa Program gives me the opportunity to experience hands- on training where I learn by doing. It gives me abetter understanding of the things I learn in class lectures and I get to apply and learn even more through going out in the field and having a very knowledgeable mentor. Everything makes more sense and is embedded in me because 1 not only learn in school but also at interning. This is why excursions are essential for us students who study and interact with the land. We can learn facts from text but learn so much more from the people who lived o the land and experienced so much more than us. I appreciate these types of excursions where I am in a relaxed environment but am learning so much. " -Ki ile'apohakulani Ho'opai on an intern excursion to Kapoho "Since the Hawaiian culture put a value on all creatures, marry marine organisms were held sacred to them, thus they took care of their species, and the environment in which they lived in order for their sustenance. "-Shelly Pelfrey "As our guides unveiled and described priceless Hawaiian artifacts to us, you could see their personal passion for the pieces. It was very exciting to see such ancient Hawaiian artifacts that I have learned about in school, but to see them makes it all the more exciting and real. " - Tanya Tavares on an Intern visit to Bishop Museum in Honolulu hosted by Dr. Isabella Abbott. Keaholoa Interns have gone on to graduate school at UH-Mona UH-Hilo and Chaminade, Pharmacy School in the continental US, and to work with Hawaii Volcano Observatory, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, The Nature Conservancy, US Department of Agriculture, US Geological Survey Biological Resources Division, `Imiloa Astronomy Center, Na Pua y, No`eau, Kamehameha Schools & Hawaii Public schools and Hawaiian Immersion schools.
